Welsh Cream Tea.
Enjoy a Welsh cream tea with homemade scones, Welsh cakes and bara brith or for that special treat add a selection of our finger sandwiches. All served with your choice of tea or coffee.
The tradition of Welsh Afternoon Tea is still kept up at the Ty Newydd Country Hotel although our approached today tends to be much more relaxed and devoid of the traditional pomp and ceremony.
While restoring the Abbey in 997AD, the monks fed local workers bread, clotted cream and strawberry preserves. The cream teas proved so popular, that the monks continued to serve them to passing travellers. And so, the cream tea was born.
Why not enjoy the mouth-
Afternoon tea as a specific meal did not evolve until the beginning of the nineteenth
century, although tea has been popular since its introduction in 1559. Anna, Duchess
of Bedford, invented the meal to fill the time between early luncheon and late dinner,
which she felt proved to be the low point of many. The Duchess started having a tray
of tea with bread and butter served to her in the mid-
As time progressed, along with the tea, there would be small pastries with clotted cream or preserves, delicate sandwiches and scone. These habits soon became a good reason for social gatherings and as a meal it became surrounded by etiquette and very strange customs; silver teapots, delicate china, cake stands, starched napkins, whether to pour the milk before or after the tea.
Afternoon tea at the Ty Newydd Country Hotel is a very special treat; you start with a selection of thinly cut finger sandwiches, like thinly sliced cucumber, smoked salmon and egg mayonnaise with mustard cress, with the crusts removed and a light garnish.
This is followed by scones, Welsh cakes and bara brith with strawberry jam and fresh cream.
All served with your choice of Tea or Coffee.
Cream Teas are thought to be “invented” in Devon by the monks of Tavistock’s Benedictine Abbey
